Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim stated that Privacy Awareness Week was particularly significant, considering upcoming changes to the Privacy Act 1988 No. 119 (Cth) (the Privacy Act), and urged "private sector organisations and agencies to consider where they are at with preparations for the new laws". Mr Pilgrim added that "[e]arly preparation is definitely going to be key for compliance with the new requirements".
An increasing number of companies are participating in programs that reward computer experts for exposing security issues in their online assets. Australia-based supermarket chain Coles has reportedly agreed to pay a bounty to individuals who are able to exploit security bugs in its online applications and protocols, while companies such as Rabobank, BigCommerce and Google have already participated in the program.

24 Apr 2013 Written by World WatchThe Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced that the Australian Federal Court has found Excite Mobile Pty Ltd (Excite Mobile) to have engaged in false and misleading and unconscionable conduct in its supply of mobile phone services to a large number of customers across Australia.
The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) has announced that former self-managed superannuation fund (SMSF) adviser Craig Dangar has been sentenced on the charge of lodging a false statement with ASIC. Specifically, ASIC stated that Mr Dangar lodged a document with ASIC in July 2012 in which he falsely claimed to being a director of SMSF Consulting Pty Ltd.
The Hong Kong (HK) Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has announced that it has fined China Everbright Securities (HK) Ltd (CES) HK$1.2 million (approximately €118,000/US$155,000) for "internal control and supervisory failures" and CES responsible officer Chan Kam Hop HK$400,000 (approximately €4,000/US$5,200) for "supervisory and managerial failures".
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has announced that losses of A$35,000 have been reported by consumers since January 2013 regarding "puppy scams". ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard explained that the scams advertise pedigree puppies "at prices that are too good to be true", before demanding advance payment and sometimes even transport costs for a delivery which will never be made.
