SCA Releases Sustainability Report, Announces New Targets

Paper company Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) has made available its 2011 Sustainability Report (undated), the highlights of which include:

  • a "[n]ew lime kiln at Östrand pulp mill in Sweden [which will reduce] carbon dioxide emissions from [fossil] fuels by 80%";
  • a "[t]raining campaign for SCA's Code of Conduct for all 44,000 employees across the globe"; and
  • a "[n]ew supplier standard implemented in hygiene operation".

SCA has also launched new sustainability targets. These include:

  • "[tripling] production of biofuels from SCA's forests by 2020";
  • "[i]ncreas[ing] wind power production on SCA forest land to 5 [terrawatt-hour] by 2020";
  • "[setting] aside at least 5% of SCA's productive forestland from forestry in the ecological landscape plans and a further 5% for nature conservation purposes";
  • "decreas[ing] the accident frequency rate by 25% between 2011 and 2016"; and
  • "mak[ing] SCA's hygiene knowledge base available to customers and consumers and ensure access to affordable, sustainable hygiene solutions".
