What are RSS Feeds?

RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and is XML-based format used for content distribution and syndication in the form of RSS feeds. Subscribing to RSS feeds allows you to receive custom, up-to-date information from your favorite online sources, without having to regularly check the site for updates.

How Do I Access RSS Feeds?

First, you need a “feed reader,” many of which are free or at little cost. Performing a search for “RSS Feed Readers” in any major online search engine will produce numerous software options. Some of the popular ones include Google Reader, Yahoo!, and Bloglines. Some web browsers and email applications even have RSS capabilities built in.

Once you’ve obtained a feed reader, you can subscribe to an RSS feed by adding the appropriate link into your reader. This can be done automatically by using a specific “Add to…” reader button (above) , if you are using one of the those particular readers. Or, you can click on the XML orange icon and make use of your browser’s RSS feature. Or simply copy the web address of the feed and load it into a reader of your choice. Whichever reader you choose will now automatically retrieve and display the site’s latest information.
