FTC Bans Robocaller

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that The Dolce Group Worldwide LLC (Dolce) and Dolce owner Fereidoun Khalilian have been permanently banned from the telemarketing business as part of a settlement order (6 January 2011), which includes a monetary judgement of more than US$4.2 million. The operation, conducting business under My Car Solutions, allegedly misled consumers into believing that the “company was affiliated with auto dealers and manufacturers, and that it was offering to sell them extended auto “warranties”, and conned them into paying thousands of dollars. These warranties were allegedly marketed through pre-recorded robocalls that also warned people that their car warranties were due to expire soon. Customers were then referred to a “senior specialist” who sold them warranties that were not even affiliated with their car manufacturer. Mr Khalilian had in the past been required to pay US$185,000 according to a 2001 settlement which banned him from the travel-related telemarketing business.
