FTC Settles For US$8 Million for Scheme to “Trick Consumers”

The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has announced that online “scareware” operators Marc D’Souza and Maurice D’Souza have agreed to pay more than US$8 million to settle charges that they “[tricked] consumers into thinking their computers were infected with malicious software, and then sold them software to “fix” their non-existent problem”. The defendants allegedly conducted the business using the names Innovative Marketing Inc and ByteHosting Internet Services LLC, and defrauded more than one million consumers.
