Race Discrimination Suit Settled
14 January 2011
The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has announced that Northwest Cosmetic Labs (NCL) has agreed to pay US$30,000 to resolve a race discrimination lawsuit, brought against it by the EEOC. NCL allegedly hired a British subject born in Zimbabwe after a number of phone interviews for a full-time paid internship in cosmetic formulation. Upon her arrival she was allegedly told that the “company would likely be “surprised” to find out that she was black, since she was British.” She received less work compared to the other two interns, despite her repeated requests for work, and was eventually fired. In addition to the penalty, NCL will adopt a non-discrimination policy and complaint procedure, train staff, and submit regular reports to the EEOC.
